Hahndorf was built by German settlers. The town has become a tourist destination and plays up its German heritage. About equal numbers of Australian and German flags can be found flying around the town.

The Hahndorf Academy provided secondary schooling at a time when children were lucky to finish primary school. My grandfather, Percy Stephenson, was one of the really lucky ones who went on to attend the Hahndorf Academy to gain a secondary education, making him rather a well educated man in late 19th Century South Australia.

The German Arms is one of several Hahndorf hostelries. It flies both German and Australian flags. No doubt it sells lager from both places as well!
