Helen Stephenson's Observations near London Bridge Station

This page contains clickable images.

I commute into London via London Bridge Station every weekday, and during 2003 I have been an interested observer of a new building being constructed in Tooley Street. The black reflective panels arranged in a saw tooth design seemed to offer a range of photographic possibilities, but as construction was nearing completion, a huge structure which somewhat resembles a venetian blind was hung across this interesting facade. I decided to treat this as a challenge and see what I could make of a building whose most obviously interesting feature had been concealed.

First of all, here is my "challenge": the black lines in the background of this scene are part of the facade of the black reflective building constructed in Tooley Street during 2003. This picture was taken from platforms 3 and 4 of London Bridge Station one Sunday afternoon.

This picture is my best attempt at rising to the challenge of photographing a building concealed by a huge venetian blind. I'm quite pleased with it and think it stands up well as an abstract.

Of course, this building offers possibilities other than its challenging facade onto Tooley Street. It is a highly reflective building and the neighbouring buildings are close enough for their mirror images to be captured, albeit with a bit of interesting distortion.

It isn't often that you see a window of this size open! I expect it will be locked tight once the building is occupied. Anyway, I saw it this way, and managed to line up a reflection in the bottom of the open window. I mounted my Ricoh XR-X on a tripod for these shots, but rather than get out a cable release, I used the self timer to fire the shutter. During the 10 second delay, a plane came into the picture, and so I took a second shot once the plane had gone. Unfortunately by then, so had some of the reflected clouds. Take your pick which one you prefer!

Taking a wider view of the rear of the building, I caught some larger distorted reflections. I used a tripod for this picture, too.

Strictly speaking, this picture is a bit of a misfit, as it's of a completely different building: one of the Guy's Hospital towers. It found its way onto this page because it was also taken from platforms 3 and 4 of London Bridge Station on the same Sunday afternoon as the first picture on this page. I thought it might be pushing my luck to set up a tripod on a station platform, so I took this hand held.
