Ruthin is a market town, and was the town nearest to our caravan, although the village of Rhewl was closer.

There were some very fine black timbered buildings in the centre of the town.

The stone in the photo on the right is located outside the building at the top of the terrace, which houses Barclays Bank. I carefully photographed the inscription above the stone so I would know what it was for, but when I got home, I couldn't decipher it! Fortunately I picked up a tourist information leaflet for Ruthin and it explains what this stone is: the Maen Huail stone is where King Arthur is reputed to have had executed a rival in love.

Here is a picture of the town square.

Had time permitted, we should have spent more time exploring the mediaeval streets of Ruthin, and maybe even paid a visit to its gaol, which is now a tourist attraction.
