Martindale Hall is about three kilometres from Mintaro, near Clare, in the mid north of South Australia, and it was the location for the filming of some of the scenes from Picnic at Hanging Rock. On a rare occasion when it was open to the public, my sister Alison and I drove up there to see it.

Martindale Hall is constructed of local sandstone. I hope Alison will forgive me for including this picture of her standing by the sundial: I remember that the sundial was a cause of some mirth between us when we overheard a child say, "Mummy! Mummy! Look! The sundial's working!" |

I don't usually put a lot of links onto my picture pages, but I'm going to make an exception here and include some relevant links:
Martindale Hall A good description of the history of Martindale Hall.
Martindale Hall Bed & Breakfast Martindale Hall is now a Bed & Breakfast! (Or it was in 1997, when this link was created!) Allowing for inflation on the prices quoted on this site, I think that you can expect to pay for the privilege of staying in one of Australia's "stately homes".
The Cyberium Guide: Clare Valley & The Mid-North Region This site includes a map of the area. Look for Mintaro.
SA Picture Martindale Hall - Mintaro A better picture than anything I managed to take with my very basic camera.
Picnic at Hanging Rock Related Factual Information Just about everything you might want to know about the film.
