Marlowe Music Week: Sunday evening chamber music

5th August, 2001

Marlowe Music Week kicked off this morning with a coffee morning that I didn't get to. It's something of a planning session, so I did let them know that my bassoon and I were at their disposal all week...

This evening we played chamber music at Malcolm and Sheila's place. The wind group went upstairs to the back room and the string group stayed downstairs in the front room. The doors between the two were firmly shut!

The wind group consisted of one flute, one oboe, two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons, so we did octets by Mozart, Hoffmeister, and some other lesser known composers whose music was exhumed from the Westminster Music Library. Some of it is going straight back in the morning!

The string group were augmented with the addition of a clarinet. The doors were shut, so I don't know exactly what they got up to, but when the doors were briefly open, it sounded like the downstairs clarinettist was having a very good time.

After playing for two hours, we all gathered downstairs for some light refreshments and parted company for the evening. The string players have a string orchestra session in the morning, while the wind players have to wait until the evening for their next session. I have lots of things to do at home, so the arrangement certainly suits me!
