Helen Stephenson's HMS Cornwall Pictures from her September 2004 Visit

This page contains clickable images.

HMS Cornwall spent a week in London at the end of September 2004, when she was tied up alongside HMS Belfast. My handbag camera, a Canon Sure Shot 115u 35mm compact, was used to record her on three separate days.

These pictures were scanned using the CanoScan FS2710 film scanner.

This picture was the last picture I took of HMS Cornwall, as she sailed at 10:30am on the Friday morning I took this. (I couldn't stay to watch her sail, as I had to be hard at work at my desk by then.) It was a lovely sunny day and the light was coming from behind me when I stood on Tower Bridge to take this picture, so this is probably the best picture on the page. When you see the next photo, and realise that the bow of HMS Cornwall and the bow of HMS Belfast are level, you will realise from this picture of their sterns that HMS Cornwall is a somewhat shorter ship than HMS Belfast. She is also not quite so tall.

Here is a picture I took from London Bridge earlier in the week, which shows HMS Cornwall and HMS Belfast from the bow end, with Tower Bridge behind them. You can also see City Pier at the right of the picture, where there are two Thames sailing barges moored. You can see the tall mast of each, with a pennant flying from the top. There is also a small tug moored at City Pier. The sun was coming from behind and to the right of Tower Bridge, although judging by the clouds in the sky, there wasn't all that much of it! I like this picture better than the previous one.

The final three pictures really pushed the little compact camera to the limits of its capabilities, particularly as I didn't have a tripod handy. I think these were taken on the second night that HMS Cornwall was in port, and were taken from the opposite bank of the Thames. You can see from the lights in the buildings in the background that it was getting fairly gloomy. The building that looks like a misshapen egg is City Hall. The nearer buildings are part of the More London development, and a good part of the space in them is occupied by Ernst & Young.

The wide view with Tower Bridge in the background.

A closer view, with some mooring posts in the foreground.

An uninterrupted view from a bit nearer to London Bridge, and probably a picture I shouldn't have put up, as there's definitely some camera shake in evidence.
