Helen Stephenson's Oxford Pictures

My cameras accompanied me to the Oxford APFPY Meet which took place during August.

Owing to lack of hard disk space, I have been using my scanner sparingly, but I've decided to jettison some of my stored bitmaps to make room for some scans of my Oxford pictures. My new film scanner will (hopefully, or I'll have wasted a lot of money!) do a better job than my flatbed scanner, so most of what is currently clogging up my hard disk may well become redundant once the film scanner's hooked up and working.

Here are the best of the scenic shots I took at Oxford.

Let's start with the oldest building in Oxford and two shots of a picturesque half-timbered building on a street corner nearby.

This church(?) is located on another street corner. The telephoto lens came out for a close-up of the clock.

I went on the open topped double decker bus tour at the same time as Derek and Denis.

We stopped outside the Sheldonian, where I made use of my new super wide angle zoom lens. I also aimed a telephoto lens at one of the figures along the fence, even though the tour guide said that they weren't important!

Oxford has many rooftop decorations, and I found the double decker bus to be a good vantage point for photographing the two on the left. On the right is a spire which contains an extensive library. It does now have a lift in it, but the students used to have to climb a great many stairs while doing their research.

On foot again, I ducked down an alleyway following a sign for the Sheldonian. When I came across a round building, I thought I'd found it, but I'd actually found the Radcliffe Camera. I took four shots, using my wide angle zoom lens for one, and my new super wide angle zoom lens for the other three. (I think!) I couldn't decide which I liked best, so I've included all of them. The railings don't look very good on the thumbnails of the two which include the fence, but the full sized images look much better.

While down the alleyway, I also photographed the coat of arms on the left, which was over a doorway; and the spire on the right. The rest of the group had kept walking along the street I had left, and when I emerged, they had disappeared. But all was not lost: I phoned Di's mobile from my mobile and soon had the rest of the group located!

In a different part of town, I photographed this building. It's modern, and the double decker guide assured the tour party that it wasn't important, but I liked it anyway. I might have a better picture of this still in my Pentax MX: the shutter "jammed" and I loaded the Pentax KM with 200ASA film instead of finishing off what was in the MX. When I took the MX to the camera shop, the proprieter pointed out the shutter lock to me, and demonstrated that when it was released that the shutter worked just fineJ Oops! That must be the one control on the MX that doesn't have an equivalent on the KM!

Here are the people shots I took at Oxford.

Clockwise, starting top left: An 800ASA no-flash picture of Denis which turned out very well indeed; Evelyn concentrating on building up a pile of chocolate eggs; Di being very careful not to look at the camera; Derek with the light almost behind him, turned into a good picture by my film scanner.

John and Maggie Meehan also attended the Meet, but managed to escape my ministrations with the camera. However, I photographed both of them at Fleetwood and John at Lincoln.

Derek and Denis also took pictures at Lincoln.
