The Colony of South Australia was proclaimed on 28th December, 1836 by Governor Hindmarsh.
The proclamation took place beneath a bowed gum tree at Glenelg.
The Old Gum Tree, although now dead, is preserved because of its historical significance.
This close up view of part of the Old Gum Tree shows a piece of it which is still
made out of the original wood, although a bolt which is part of the preservation effort can be seen.
Quite a bit of the wood had rotted to such an extent that concrete has been used to maintain the original arch.
There are a number of commemorative plaques on the site.
Plaque commemorating South Australia's first industry.
Plaque commemorating the 21st year of the colony of South Australia.
Stone containing 20th Century plaques.
Plaque commemorating the gift of the site to the town of Glenelg.
Plaque commemorating the construction of the protective canopy.
